Language Arts - Reading and Writing
Over the course of the year, students do we do a variety of book reports, projects and writing assignments, including creative writing, narrative, persuasive, informative and expository. Below you will find samples of graphic organizers, student work and comments I make on Google docs to help students produce better projects and writing. These are taken from various projects we complete throughout the year.

During Black History Month, students read a fiction book called Jackie and Me. This story is about a boy who time travels back and meets Jackie Robinson. At the end of the novel, they complete a book report on the topic. Here is a picture of a completed project.
This is an example of a brainstorming sheet I created to help with the prewriting process. The assignment was to create a re-imagination or sequel of one of their Roald Dahl literature circle books. Students either read Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches or Matilda, based on their reading level. The below file is the one used for James and the Giant Peach.

Below you will find an example of a persuasive writing assignment that we do on whether schools should have homework. This is an example of a finished assignment that was submitted for a grade. The students again went through the prewriting, drafting, peer editing, self editing, teacher editing and revising stages to produce a completed project. Students use Step-Up to Writing Color Coding to help them organize their writing.

4th Grade Social Studies
Students in my fourth grade class participate in a lot of research assignments to help them with their 21st century skills.

Students begin the year with a partner/group research project on the California regions. They are assigned various things to research about their region and then are to collaboratively create a Google Slides presentation of the information they found. They then present these to the class. This is an example of a pdf version of a completed slideshow.

One of the biggest projects of the year in 4th grade is the mission project. Students have various parts of this project that they are required to complete and the majority of the work is done in class. Below is the project guidelines and instructions that I created for students and parents to follow.

Below you will find an example of the completed mission essay. Students spend 3+ weeks of class time working on the essay. They work on two sections of the essay per week and then receive feedback from me on how to make it more detailed.

Students also participate in a Gold Rush Day in which we pretend we are in the 1850's. They dress up, pack a lunch from that time, play games, make butter and pan for gold. Below is the sheet with information about the day.

This is an example of a collaborative project that students create when learning about the English colonies. Students in groups are to create a newspaper with various elements such as a news article, editorial piece, advertisements, a political cartoon and classifieds. Each student is assigned one element of the paper to create. Below is an example of a completed project.

Students learn about various Native American tribes in North and Middle America and complete a project on it. They are to write an essay about their tribe and then have the option to complete a slide show or a diorama about their tribe. Below you will find a picture of a student created diorama and a Minecraft tour of a Native American village that a student created.
At the end of the year, students complete a biography and paper doll of a famous individual from the American Revolution. Below you will find the project guidelines, note-taking sheet used to help them research and an example of a completed essay.
